As a follow-up to our previous Breaking News Alert sent in January, the IRS and FTB have further postponed filing and payment deadlines to October 16, 2023, which is beyond the original storm-related extensions to May 15, 2023. The IRS guidance can be found here, and the FTB guidance can be found here.
Both the IRS and FTB have now postponed filing and payment deadlines to October 16, 2023, for all taxpayers located in all California counties except the following: Imperial, Kern, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, and Sierra. The IRS and FTB will automatically provide filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Therefore, taxpayers do not need to contact either agency to get this relief.
This applies to all returns and payments due before the October 16, 2023, deadline. It also applies to any IRS and FTB estimated taxes that are due before October 16, as well as the March 15 and June 15 passthrough entity elective tax payments for California. Eligible taxpayers will also have until October 16 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts. While the extension applies to payroll tax returns, it does not apply to employment and excise tax deposits.
