The IRS has issued a statement that taxpayers are erroneously receiving Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) letters with an incorrect year listed (2014). This information is only applicable to you if the IRS has previously issued you or your family members an IP PIN.
Taxpayers who receive such a letter, CP 01A Notice dated Jan. 4, 2016, may use the IP PIN listed on all individual tax returns filed in 2016. An IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers that allows their tax returns/refunds to be processed without delay and helps prevent the misuse of their social security numbers on fraudulent Federal income tax returns.
